Catamaran-based surf trips through Indonesia’s most coveted breaks — Mentawai, Sumatra, Bali, Lombok — aboard a flagship catamaran where the surf instructors are part of the crew. The boat moves with the swell. The crew know the line-up. You wake up at the next break.
Indonesia’s archipelago holds some of the most coveted line-ups on earth — Mentawai, Bali, Lombok, Sumatra. Getting to them well, and surfing them with people who actually know the reef, is what separates a great trip from a frustrating one. We run these voyages on flagship catamarans (think Fenides, Sequoia) where the dedicated surf instructors live on board as part of the crew — not as flown-in guests.
The model is simple: the captain anchors you in the right place for the conditions, the instructor briefs the line-up with you over breakfast, and the tender shuttles you to the break. Between sessions you’re back on a yacht with proper cabins, full air-conditioning, real meals, and the deck space to recover before the afternoon swell.
Sessions are tailored — the instructors are pros who can coach experienced surfers through reef breaks they’ve never ridden, and patiently take confident-but-not-expert surfers into appropriate spots. Every trip is built around the weather window: you’ll move island chains in your sleep.
Unlike our Caribbean and Mediterranean programmes where we partner with an external surf school, Indonesia is run end-to-end by the yacht. The instructors live on board for the season, ride the same reefs daily, and know every line-up by heart.
Indonesia is remote. The breaks are scattered across hundreds of miles of archipelago, the reefs are unforgiving, and the conditions change daily. A flown-in surf guide who hasn’t been on the boat all season can’t deliver what a resident instructor can: real-time knowledge of which spot is firing today, which reef the swell is wrapping into, where the wind is offshore.
The yachts we use — our flagships Fenides and Sequoia, plus partner yachts of the same class — are sized for this. Generous owner suites, full air-conditioning, a chef onboard, and the deck space to lay out three quivers without it feeling crowded. The instructors aren’t guests on the yacht; the yacht is built around them and the line-ups.
